How to Tell if Honey Is Pure: 5 Simple Checks at Home

Raw honey dripping from a wooden dipper into a wooden bowl, with white flowers

Almost every family in Pakistan has bought a jar of “pure” honey that turned out to be mostly sugar syrup. So it is a fair question: how do you know what is in the jar? Here are the simple checks people use at home, what each one can really tell you, and what to look for when you buy.

1. Read the label first

Pure honey has one ingredient: honey. If the label mentions glucose, syrup, sugar, flavour or “honey blend”, it is not pure honey. Also look for the source. A good seller can tell you where the honey came from and which flowers the bees were feeding on.

2. The thumb test

Put a small drop of honey on your thumb. Pure honey is thick and usually stays in place. Honey that runs off quickly or spreads like water often has added water or syrup.

3. The water glass test

Drop a spoon of honey into a glass of room-temperature water without stirring. Pure honey tends to sink to the bottom as a lump. Mixed honey often starts to dissolve and cloud the water straight away.

4. Crystallisation is a good sign

Many people think honey that turns grainy or solid in winter has “gone bad” or has sugar in it. Usually it is the opposite. Raw honey naturally crystallises in cold weather. Place the jar in warm (not boiling) water and it turns runny again.

Crystallised honey is not spoiled honey. It is one of the most common signs that the honey is raw and has not been over-processed.

5. Smell and taste

Real honey has a floral smell and a taste that changes from batch to batch. Very sweet honey with no aroma at all, or one that tastes exactly the same as every other cheap jar, is worth questioning.

What home tests cannot tell you

These checks give you useful hints, but none of them is proof. Skilled sellers can make syrup that passes the thumb test and the water test. The only reliable answer is a lab test. That is why we keep our sourcing simple and transparent:

  • Our honey comes from trusted local farmers.
  • It is only strained, not heated or blended.
  • Nothing is added, and nothing useful is taken out.

If you have any question about a jar you bought from us, message us on WhatsApp and we will tell you exactly where it came from.
